Three medals from the Denver International Beer Festival in 2015, a silver medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championship, a Silver medal for their Hefeweizen at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival, and USA Today’s winner for “Best New Brewery of the Year.” It’s hard to think that WeldWerks Brewing Company is only coming up on their one year anniversary.
WeldWerks opened on March 5th, 2015. in downtown Greeley. “Things took off really quick, we started talking in February , we had a business plan done by April, had our equipment by May, and started construction in August… we brewed our first batch of Coffee Stout on December 31st.” said head brewer Neil Fisher.
Their one year anniversary is going to be as ambitious as their first year of operation with a three day blow out featuring live music, food trucks, and 15 beer releases. Expect many barrel aged options that have been resting in bourbon barrels since day one. “[Implementing a barrel aging program] was something we were very passionate about doing, but it was hard being patient, and committing as a young brewery.” explains co-owner, Colin Jones.
More than just creating a base beer and introducing it to a barrel, Fisher designed Medianoche, a slightly more robust, sticky, and almost “chewy” imperial stout that can withstand the affects of time. Ten months later, it is now ready for their one year anniversary. Fisher has overlaid several flavor profiles with Medianoche including toasted coconut, Peruvian coffee (a collaboration with Snowbank brewery), and maple. Jones and Fisher foreshadowed more experimental fruit sours and other barrel aged beauties for their one year party March 11-13th, 2016.
As the two reflect back on the first year as a brewery, Fisher summarizes “Phew! [it has been] humbling, overwhelming, and surreal. Not one thing determines success: medals, press coverage, awards – there are great breweries who don’t get that. We feel very lucky to have our customers who have stuck with us.” USA Today’s panel of beer experts nominated WeldWerks as one of twenty new breweries for “Best New Brewery of the Year.” However, the ranking was ultimately left up to voters to decide. So while WeldWerks has made a national impact with their craft beer, they have also created a pack of faithful fans locally.
