From New York State based, Moustache Brewing Company, comes Proton, the brewery’s first double IPA release as part of their new Atomic Series. The Atomic Series according to the press release, is set to be a “collection of double IPAs that harness the power of new and interesting hops.” Proton is brewed with Azacca, Simcoe, and Lemondrop hops and weighs in at 8.5% ABV and 60 IBUs.
According to the hop growers themselves, each hop boasts unique characteristics. Azacca for one is said to portray intense tropical fruit and even very ripe mango. Theoretically this should pair well alongside the earthy Simcoe, and balance on the other side of the spectrum with light citrous notes from the Lemondrop hops.
The nose of Proton came across as largely piney, which mellowed to reveal dried papaya and sweet tangerine. The beer pours deep gold to pale amber, and with a haziness which nearly can’t be seen through. First sip came across as sweet with lots of tropical fruit and not extremely bitter. Proton finishes clean, leaving only a pleasant lingering bitterness, making one want another sip. Certainly worth a try for any IPA fan, and for some could end up being a go-to IPA as Proton is exceptionally easy to drink. Cheers!
